Genetics

Updated: Apr 10, 2022

Genetics is the scientific study of genes and heredity—of how certain qualities or traits are passed from parents to offspring as a result of changes in DNA sequence.

DNA Sequence

Your genes contain instructions that tell your cells to make molecules called proteins. Genes qualify certain traits in a person. Our DNA, including all of our genes, is stored in chromosomes. Hereditary is how certain qualities or traits are passed from parents to offspring as a result of changes in a DNA sequence. Furthermore, a gene is a segment of DNA that contains instructions for building one or more molecules that help the bodywork. Researchers estimate that humans have about 20,000 genes.

Genetic Related Careers

Gene related studies a vastly growing, as scientist discover new disease, cures, and findings related to the genes stored in our body. If you chose to purse any careers in the fields of genetics here are a couple of options

  • Clinical laboratory scientist - Perform tests to learn more information about genetic disorders that individuals inherit.

  • Genetic counselor - Combine the medical work of genetics with the practice of mental health counseling.

  • Clinical research coordinator - Responsible for supervising the work of researchers who study genetic conditions and find unique and creative ways to treat them.

  • Research scientist - Perform experiments to better understand certain genetic conditions, how to identify them, and different ways to treat them.

  • Pharmacologist - Genetic pharmacology focuses on how individuals interact with drugs and other substances based on their genetic makeup.
